MMD 3040-N Computer Aided Analysis. Reassessment 2 2019/20
Non-linear analyses
This assessment covers learning outcomes 2, 4, 6, and 8 for this module and the standard university assessment criteria for this level apply. According to certain engineering standard, a ring gasket is required to have around 0.2mm of permanent deformation so that flange can be sealed tightly as shown in Figure 1. As an engineer, you are required to determine an appropriate pressure level to be applied on the ring gasket. The geometry of the gasket can be modelled as octagonal toroidal as shown in Figures 2(a) and 2(b). It is noted that the side of the octagon is of s = 20mm and the diameter is of 860mm.

With the support of your literature research, you are required to produce 2000 words report which includes:
1. Literature research on ring gasket, which covers industrial application, material properties, failure mode etc.
(20 marks)
2. Coverage of finite element theories on non-linear analysis for ring gasket problem.
(25 marks)
3. Detail explanation of the procedures on how 3-D Finite Element Analysis is carried out using NX software to solve this ring gasket problems.
(35 marks)
4. Explain how you acquire meaningful results and justify the result reliability.
(10 marks)
5. Describe the challenges/limitations of using finite element modelling on ring gasket problem and propose solution to address the limitations.
(10 marks)
You are expected to perform literature research in order to support your statement. Please note that you are encouraged to use picture illustrations to support your explanations. You are required to upload your report to blackboard by 13th August 2020 end of day.
