Alternatively use an external hard drive/or just email it to yourself.

Plagiarism Policy

Assignments which have copied work from websites, from other authors, from other students or any other sources will receive a grade of 0. All instances of plagiarism must be reported to the Head of Department who, in turn, is obliged to report them to the Registrar. Students who receive this grade may be asked to justify their actions to the Institute’s plagiarism panel. Students must apply to the examination board at the end of the academic year to re-submit their work in such instances. Please note that copying verbatim from original sources is unacceptable even if you provide references.

Referencing

Please consult ‘Credit Where Credit is Due’ for the referencing system used by IT Carlow. Please ensure accuracy and consistency in your referencing. The following are the most common reference types that you will need when compiling the reference list at the end of your assignments.

Journal articles:

For example:

Seebohm, P., Gilchrist, A. and Morris, D. (2012) Bold but Balanced: How Community Development Contributes to Mental Health and Inclusion. Community Development Journal, 47 (4), pp. 473-490.

Books

For example:

Banks, S. (2012) Ethics and Values in Social Work. (4th Ed.) Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan.

Book Chapter

If a book is an edited collection with different contributors for each chapter, cite the author of the specific chapter you have used in your work. If you use more than one chapter, cite each author separately. Include the page numbers of the chapter in the bibliography.

For example:

Forde, C. (2009) The Politics of Community Development: Relationship with the State. In: Forde, C., Kiely, E. and Meade, R., eds. Youth and Community in Ireland: Critical Perspectives, Dublin: Gill and Macmillan, pp. 49-68.

Webpage

Unless the webpage has a specified individual author, you can treat the organisation as the author. If the year the webpage was created is available, you can give this. If not, simply state ‘no date available’. You must also include the date which you last accessed the webpage in brackets at the end of the reference.

For example:

Children’s Rights Alliance, (no date available) What Are Children’s Rights? Available: http://www.childrensrights.ie/childrens-rights-ireland/childrens-rights-ireland [accessed 01 September, 2013].

To avoid common referencing mistakes, please note the following:

Ø  In the reference list, place the title of the journal, not the specific journal article, in italics.

Ø  In the reference list, give a full reference for a webpage not just the url.

Ø  When referencing books in the reference list, the place of publication (e.g. Dublin) precedes the name of the publisher (e.g. Gill and Macmillan).

Ø  There is no need to bullet point or number your reference list.

Ø  When citing websites within the main body of your assignment, use the (author, date) formulation rather than the url; i.e. write (Children’s Rights Alliance, no date available) rather than inserting the web address.

When quoting directly from an original source within the main body of your assignment, give the page number(s). (Try to avoid excessive use of direct quotation.

How to use Chicago Citation

UK assignment helper

The Chicago citation format is a citation style that has two varieties. You may either use:

  • the notes and bibliography citation format or

  • the author-date citation format.

The former citation format, the notes, and the bibliography format use footnotes or endnotes to cite sources instead of in-text citations. This format is usually preferred by language and other humanities students. Each footnote or endnote as a superscript number that corresponds to a reference listed in the bibliography. A footnote is a note found at the end of a word or page in superscript. When you come across numbers after a word written like this 1, you have probably come across a footnote. Clicking on it will link you to the full citation. Endnotes are found at the end of the chapter instead of after words or the end of pages. The advantage of this system is that:

  • It can accommodate even sources that do not fit into the restraints of the author-date system.

  • Moreover, it allows for more comfortable reading as it does not abruptly interrupt the reader with a citation and links to them instead.

The author-date format is more widely used in natural and social sciences. In-text citations in this format involve stating the author's last name followed by the date of publication of the article, journal, or paper in parentheses. Each in-text citation usually corresponds to a full source in the bibliography. Aside from the use of numbered notes versus parenthetical references in the text, the two systems share a similar style.

You should make citations in the following order: the author name(s), page title, website title, web address, and date published or accessed. The first author's name should be reversed in the bibliography, with a comma placed after the last name and a period after the first name (or any middle name). Titles and affiliations associated with the author should be omitted.

The easiest method to cite using the Author-Date formatting system is to move the year published in the citation to follow the author's name.

A few points to remember:

  • If an author's name is not available, you should begin the citation using the name of the website owner.

  • When the title of a work is referenced, you should use the full title in quotation marks and a full stop following it. The full stop should be within the quotation marks as well.

  • The first author's name should be reversed in the bibliography, with a comma placed after the last name and a period after the first name (or any middle name).

  • Titles and affiliations associated with the author should be omitted.
