Why Supply chains are global?
•
Efficient
•
Resource constraints
•
Cost effectiveness – Raw material/ labour
•
Expertise
•
Technology enabled to share information
What are the Issues?
•
Difficult to plan
•
Inherent risk e.g. Thai floods,
Japan Tsunami, Iceland ash cloud,
Australian floods
•
Increased complexity
•
Suppliers are core to their customers capability
•
Supply chains needs to compete with each other
Barriers to worldwide sourcing
•
Lack of knowledge and skills concerning global sourcing
•
Resistance to change
•
Longer lead times
•
Difference in customs, language, and culture
•
Currency fluctuation
•
Increased supply risk
CIPS View
•
Degun (2013) puts forward these priorities
•
Reduce cost while improving customer satisfaction
and supporting expansion and
introduce new products
•
Manage the complexity arising from Omni-channel fulfilment
•
Lower costs and greater efficiency
•
Safety and quality following
horse meat scandal
•
Develop new skills for supply chain professionals
and demonstrate ROI
•
Concerns on environment
• Issues on CSR related to Supply chains
McKinsey View
(Gyorey, Jochim and Norton,2010)
•
Emerging from downturn
•
Reduce operating costs – changing priorities
•
Impact of risk
•
Facing future
•
Involvement of management
•
Having right information
Strategy and role
in Supply chains
•
Strategy plays a key role in the supply chains performance
•
PWC finds that Strategically focussed supply chains
of organisations help them improve their
performance
•
Use supply chain as an asset
•
Develop end to end
architecture
•
Design their organisation for performance
•
Build a collaborative model
•
Use metrics to drive SC performance
CIPS view on sustainability
•
Sustainability in procurement terms
takes into account social, economic and environmental factors alongside the
typical price and quality considerations when procuring products and services.
•
Sustainable procurement helps
organisations to eliminate waste, become more energy efficient and inevitably
save money.
Some other things to consider
•
SCM is dynamic and demands are increasing over the years
•
Role of SCM in an organisation is different from
organisation to
organisation
•
SCM can help organisations achieve
their objectives as they can predict demand and pass the information to
suppliers and be better prepared for changes in demand volumes
•
SCM needs a sponsor from senior management to be successful
•
SCM helps monitor and influence the whole cost base
CILT on Logistics
•
The Chartered Institute of Logistics
and Transport (CILT) in the UK is
the membership organisation for
professionals leading supply chain operations for the movement of goods and people.
•
Members of the Institute are
involved in the management and design of infrastructure,
systems, processes and information flows, and in the creation, management and
continuous improvement of effective organisations.
•
The work of our members adds value
to people and society and directly impacts the
environment, business profitability and economic growth.
Further terms to research
•
Outsourcing/offshoring – dealing
with suppliers out of organisation/out of country
•
Re-shoring – bringing back work die
to issues with quality, culture and
economics
•
Near-shoring – Firms who are
relocating work to countries which are geographically near – Mexico, brazil for
USA, North Africa or Eastern Europe
for Western Europe
•
International purchasing – sharing order information
• Global sourcing – Integrating and co-ordinating
